Trained personnel for paediatric diabetes and other endocrine diseases are virtually non-existent in Sub-Saharan Africa, cases of late and poor diagnosis of endocrine disorders in children is also a major problem. The prevalence of diabetes has reached epidemic proportions and it is predicted that developing countries will bear the brunt of an epidemic in the 21st century. It is with the realization of these, that the University of Nairobi, Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, Kenyatta National Referral Hospital, Aga Khan University Hospital Nairobi, and Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital in partnership with the European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology (ESPE) initiated the Pediatric Endocrinology Training Centre for Africa (PETCA). This was all enabled with funding from the World Diabetes Foundation (WDF)
- To provide African Paediatricians with the knowledge and skills to diagnose and manage childhood diabetes mellitus and other endocrine disorders through an appropriate mix of onsite and home country training.
- To facilitate establishment of comprehensive Paediatric Diabetes and endocrinology clinics in African countries.
